Ruth Horstmanshoff – De Optimistische Pop-Up Studio

Ruth Horstmanshoff – Optimistic Pop-Up Studio
For the past few years, artist Ruth has had a studio space in Lombardijen.
From her home in Kop van Zuid, she bikes there every day, continuously discovering new sides of Rotterdam South the area she has called home for over twenty years.
Ruth observes the world around her with curiosity, always asking: how can we, as people, make space for one another?
“I find public space fascinating,” she says, “but also the kind of space you create through conversation, or through the way you look or move.”
Before long, the surroundings in Lombardijen became Ruth’s main artistic focus.
“Lombardijen is the last garden village of Rotterdam, and it was intentionally designed with plenty of green space and space for each other. That’s why I want to explore how that feeling can be strengthened.”
In 2024, Ruth began working with a group of young people on a podcast series to spotlight stories from the neighborhood.
She now continues that journey with a new project: The Optimistic Pop-Up Studio.
By sculpting plant pots together and crocheting and drawing eyes to be placed in public spaces, Ruth hopes to bring playfulness, softness, and wonder back into the cityscape.
“I believe that when you see the same things every day, you eventually stop noticing them. But when something new suddenly appears, it makes you look at your surroundings differently and also at yourself and each other.”
