Humanitas is actief in heel Nederland, maar is ooit begonnen in Rotterdam. Het heeft tegenwoordig 38 verpleeghuizen en helpt meer en meer mensen thuis. Gijsbert van Herk is voorzitter van de Raad van Bestuur van Stichting Humanitas: ”Nog steeds verlenen wij juist zorg aan mensen die buiten de boot vallen. Op dit moment zijn we in Rotterdam bijvoorbeeld bezig met de opvang en begeleiding van slachtoffers mensenhandel of mensen die vanwege geweld in de thuissituatie nergens terecht kunnen met hun kinderen.”

In de participatie samenleving wordt verwacht dat iedereen snel voor zichzelf kan zorgen. “Dat lukt niet altijd. Vroeger lag iemand 25 dagen in het ziekenhuis, tegenwoordig is dat 5 dagen. De vraag naar zorg aan huis is enorm toegenomen, terwijl we daar in Nederland nog niet goed voor ingericht zijn. Verpleeghuizen worden zo ineens een soort semi-ziekenhuizen die aan allerlei normen moeten voldoen.”

Humanitas started in Rotterdam and is active throughout the Netherlands. Today it has 38 nursing homes and increasingly helps people at home. Gijsbert van Herk is the chair of the Humanitas Foundation’s board of directors: “We still provide care for those who fall by the wayside. We are currently engaged in the care and supervision of victims of human trafficking or people who can not go anywhere with their children because of domestic violence.”

In the society of participation, it is expected that everyone can quickly take care of themselves. “That’s not how it always works. In the past, where one might have spent 25 days in hospital, nowadays it’s 5. The demand for home care has increased enormously, but we are not yet equipped for this in the Netherlands. Nursing homes suddenly become pseudo-hospitals that have to comply with many standards.”
