Theater Walhalla
Het intieme karakter van dit kleine theater verrijkt het culturele aanbod in de stad en helpt bij de ontwikkeling van Katendrecht en het Deliplein tot een bruisende en vitale plek.

Theater Walhalla is een initiatief van programmamaakster Rachèl van Olm en cabaretier Harry-Jan Bus. Het kleine theater is in 2008 aan de Sumatraweg op Katendrecht geopend. Walhalla is vernoemd naar het roemruchte vooroorlogse danspaleis Dancing Walhalla dat op hetzelfde adres zat.
Het kleine theater is inmiddels uitgebreid met een grotere zaal in de voormalige Steinwegkantine. Op de begane grond van deze Kantine Walhalla zit café-restaurant FC (Foyer-Café) Walhalla. Voorjaar 2018 is aan de Tolhuisstraat ook Werkplaats Walhalla geopend. Dit kleinschalige productiehuis biedt talentvolle net-afgestudeerde theatermakers ruimte om te experimenteren, te groeien en mooie producties te ontwikkelen. Daarnaast wordt hier met de MBO-theaterschool een leerwerkplaats opgezet.
Harry-Jan benadrukt het Rotterdamse karakter van Walhalla. “We werken met jonge Rotterdamse theatermakers én bieden plaats voor gevestigde Rotterdamse namen. Bovendien hebben onze programma’s vaak Rotterdamse thema’s, zoals Feyenoord de Opera, café de Kapenees en een voorstelling over de oorlog in Rotterdam. We houden ook van de directheid van ons Rotterdamse publiek.”
Rachèl en Harry-Jan zijn ook de initiatiefnemers van festivals als De Nacht van de Kaap, Het Welkom Thuis Festival, De Ronde van Katendrecht en het Kid Dynamite Jazz Festival. “Met Walhalla brengen we theater van hoog niveau op een inclusieve, laagdrempelige manier. Door veel met vrijwilligers te werken, kunnen we de kosten laag houden. We zijn geen wijktheater maar er komen wel veel wijkbewoners kijken.”
Theater Walhalla is an initiative by programme maker Rachèl van Olm and comedian Harry-Jan Bus. This small theatre opened on the Sumatraweg, Katendrecht, in 2008. Walhalla is named after Dancing Walhalla, the famous dance hall that occupied the same address before the war.
The small theatre has expanded, with a larger space in the former Steinweg canteen named Kantine Walhalla. On the ground floor is café-restaurant FC (Foyer-Café) Walhalla. Werkplaats Walhalla also opened in 2018 at the Tolhuisstraat. This small-scale production house offers talented, recently graduated theatre makers the space to experiment, grow, and develop striking productions. A workshop will also be set up here with the MBO theatre school.
Harry-Jan stresses Walhalla’s Rotterdam character. “We are working with young Rotterdam theatre-makers and providing space for established Rotterdam names. Moreover, our programmes often address Rotterdam themes, such as Feyenoord the Opera, Café de Kapenees, and a performance about the war in Rotterdam. We also appreciate the directness of our Rotterdam audience.”
Rachel and Harry-Jan also organise festivals, such as De Nacht van de Kaap, Het Welkom Thuis Festival, De Ronde van Katendrecht, and the Kid Dynamite Jazz Festival. “Walhalla is high-level theatre in an inclusive, low-threshold style. Working with volunteers keep costs low. We’re not a neighbourhood theatre, but we entertain many local residents.”
